Singer Model 221 (Featherweight) General Maintenance

NOTE:This class is designed to teach basic maintenance, troubleshooting andtechniques to enhance your abilities with the Singer Model 221. You shouldalready have some experience using this machine and have a full functionalsewing machine. We will have a small number of maintenance items availablefor purchase, such as belts, spool felts, and drip pads.

Class Supplies (please bring with you):

1. A working sewing machine with power cord and foot control
2. A new needle (80/12 or 90/14); Schmetz quilting is recommended
3. Cotton thread and two (2) full bobbins (C&C machine quilting)
4. Test fabric to sew
5. Hand or small bath towel, and an apron or work shirt.

Basic Maintenance – Exterior

1. External cleaning and preservation
2. Cleaning and preserving the carrying case
3. Odor removal and drip pad replacement

Basic Maintenance Machine Head

1. Cleaning and dust/thread removal
2. Lubrication How to and the best lubricants
3. Lubrication Featherweight specific
4. Cleaning and lubrication in the bobbin case area
5. Bobbin tension adjustment
6. Cleaning and adjusting the top thread tension
7. Electrical, plugs, cords and foot controls
8. Electrical, belt replacement and adjustment

Sewing on the Featherweight

1. Thread and needle selection and sizes
2. Bobbin winding
3. Thread tension adjustments, for synthetic thread
